Frequently asked questions

1. How long will I be at the centre?

Patients who do not have sedation are usually here for about an hour. With sedation allow about an hour and a half.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of sedation?

75% of gastrosocopies are done without sedation so most patients find it acceptable. It is unpleasant but not painful. If you have sedation you wont be able to drink alcohol nor drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after the test. In addition you MUST have someone at home overnight as you will be drowsy. Sedation will make you feel relaxed and detatched but you will not be unconsious.

3. What is the drug used for sedation?

Midazolam, which is a short acting Benzodiazepine (similar to valium).

4. When will I get the result?

The doctor will give you the result immediately after the test, and indicate what treatment may be required, although your GP will provide this. We send the full report to your GP and you should visit your doctor after a few days to discuss the result.

5. Are there alternatives to having the camera?

Yes, an X-ray examination of the gullet and stomach (called a Barium Meal) - although the results are not quite as good, and some patients will still require a gastroscopy after the Barium Meal if there are abnormalities.

Yes if you do not have sedation, but you must not drive if you do have sedation.
